Whether you are after a new Kitchenaid or washing machine, the following should at least be a decent place to start…

No, not the latest place to find French silk lingerie, this is actually an electrical homeware store that has been run by the same Indian family for years (before their foray into electricals, they used to run a fabric shop – hence the name – which they have carried over). They will better almost any price you can find elsewhere (in fact, it is worth visiting Best Denki, or similar, for research before you go). An institution in the heart of Holland V, you can purchase just about anything electrical, from coffee makers and cameras to barbecues and washing machines. The service is second to none – they really know their stuff and their advice is well worth taking. BTW: Avoid weekends when it is horribly busy or go early evening and then treat yourself to dinner nearby.

A very unexciting shop but hugely useful and stocks and sells a good selection of basic electrical gear, including everything you’d need to set up house (washing machines, tumble dryers, fridges, cookers, microwaves etc). Good prices make buying from here easy as you can be fairly confident you won’t be beaten within the retail market (Parisilk may be comparable and if you can face it and have time – go here first. If you can’t, and bearing in mind that Parisilk can involve some rather hard bargaining, then come here and be done with it). What’s more, their display is comprehensive which makes it so much less exhausting. They also have a branch in the east coast (Katong Mall #B1-03/11; T: (+65) 6348 7998). BTW: Prices are fixed but if you are buying a lot, try to negotiate and at the very least, get the delivery thrown in.
Opening Times: 11am-9pm daily

If you need electrical leads or wires, this is the place to go. If they don’t have the relevant adaptor in stock, they can cut and bond a new end on to your lead for you. If they don’t have what you are looking for, which is unlikely, try UF TECHNOLOGY one floor up (#03-69; T: (+65) 6339 3322).
Opening Times: 10.30am-8pm daily
JOHN 3:16 PHOTOGRAPHY
Funan Centre (#05-46)
109 North Bridge Road
An unlikely name for a photographers store but this is by far the best and most honest (note the bible ref in the name) in town. If it is a Nikon or Canon that you are after, there is no better place to buy. If you are a really serious photographer and it is only Leica that will do, then this is also one of the very few stockists in Singapore. It is a small but perfectly formed store. Always busy but wait your turn and you will get undivided attention. They give good advice to first time buyers of SLRs too. Once you have invested go and do a course at the Photographic Society of Singapore who do very reasonable evening classes to teach you how to actually use your piece of kit!
Opening Times: 12pm-9pm Mon-Sat. Closed Sun

As fanatical as we are about a bargain and getting the best price, this is one of our top camera shops for no nonsense practical advice. You will not pay less than you should if you come here, but nor will you pay more – and they really know their stuff. Recommended to us by a professional Singaporean photographer as being good value and honest and the only place he goes to buy gear, we figured that there is no point reinventing the wheel. They also have an outlet in Marina Square but the staff are better in this branch.
Opening Times: 10am-7pm Mon-Sat. Closed Sun
