There are many more out there, but these are the ones we rate….

Regarded as a shopping institution (the flagship on Orchard occupies Singapore’s oldest and most iconic store), Tangs is comparable to Selfridges in London or Bloomingdales in New York. Shop here for clothes with a bit of individuality (Woman’s Wardrobe on Level 2 is definitely worth a trip) if the lure of one of the biggest beauty halls doesn’t do it for you – it certainly seems to do it for a lot of people and is often so rammed that it makes getting upstairs to the clothes very hard work. But stick with it, it’s worth it. Tang + Co is a boutique zone within the department store (at the back of L2) and is particularly good, with labels like Stella Forest, Trina Turk, Marlene Birger and Tibi. There is also a stand-alone Tang + Co accessories-only store at Paragon (#02-12; T: (+65) 6737 8281) selling a great selection of shoes & handbags. Don’t get it confused with ‘Tangs Studio’ (sometimes written as StudioTANGS) which is their in-house fashion label for shoes, bags and clothing. This line is also available in Tangs at VivoCity (unlike Tang + Co), but Tangs Orchard is the mothership with the best selection of everything. Cookshop section is on B1 and is excellent, as is the children’s department for toddlers and above (the baby gear’s not great; go to Chateau de Sable for that – see BUY ME For Them). BTW: Tangs Studio also has several stand-alone outlets, see ACCESSORIES.

The anchor of Ngee Ann City, which is the largest mall in Singapore, Taka is a high-end department store groaning with super chic designer goods from all over the globe. Shop here for designer clothing as well as good home and beauty buys. Relatively hard to navigate but staff are quite helpful and if it isn’t in Takashimaya, then it IS likely to be in Ngee Ann City somewhere, so you don’t have to move the car/let your face see sunlight/think too hard. You WILL have to walk as it’s huge in here.

You what? No, try Yue Hwa (it’s almost pronounced the same if you leave the ‘t’ off ‘what’). Not by any stretch high-end, but a great 5 storey treasure chest of quality (and some less quality) products at fixed prices, imported from mainland China. Standing proud in the pulsing heart of Chinatown, be prepared to dig for your booty with silk hand embroidered dressing gowns (very Shanghai Tang but at a fraction of the price) nestling next to nylon housecoats. They sell accessories, clothes (for men and women – but the men’s clothes are nothing special), tea, food (one floor is a huge Chinese supermarket), jewellery and artefacts. A great place for present buying. If you really can’t stand the sound of this store, head to SHANGHAI TANG in Takashimaya (#02-12; T: (+65) 6737 3537) where you can be spoon fed pricey but delicious Asian-inspired clothing for men and women as well as great home accessories and pressies. BTW: Parking secret (keep it quiet though) – park at OG right next door on Upper Cross Street. Be warned though…it does involve a car lift – easy when you’ve done it once.
Opening Times: 11am-9pm Mon-Fri & Sun; 11am-10pm Sat
