Marina Bay Sands (#B2-19)

The Shoppes

Singapore 238801

T: (+65) 6688 7020

Had enough of branded bags to last you a lifetime but still want tip top quality and not afraid to pay for it? Then this is for you. Luscious solid colours are jewel like and leather is butter soft.  This particular store – like all the others that they categorise as being part of ‘The Shoppes’ at MBS (Charles & Keith etc) – is open super late.  Great for some post dinner browsing, which makes Pizzeria Mozza (see below) the perfect venue for a girls-only dinner.

Opening Times: 10am-11pm Sun-Thu; 10am-12 midnight Fri & Sat

#01-183 Block 21 Ghim Moh Road

T: (+65) 9108 5418

This has a ridiculous name and a tricky sounding address, but it’s really very easy to find and sells really rather decent copy handbags (as well as a bunch of other things which are fab kids goody bag fillers). Park at Ghim Moh market and then walk down the left hand side of the market (as you are looking at it).  There are a row of shops also to your left, all facing towards the wet market (there is a pizza place – actually quite good – an optician etc).  AG is at the very end of this row with a blue awning.  OK, so the quality is not ‘triple A’ but its not at all bad and most definitely worth a look.  Cath Kidson is his speciality and they are pretty pass-off-able.  Around $13 for a tote. He has Longchamps too which are equally good and vary in size, so if you want a classic sized bag, be lucky as they are not always in stock.  Cute Marc Jacobs clutches/make up bags too.  Go for lunch at Ghim Moh market afterwards (see Eat Me, Drink Me Local for Ghim Moh market hawker loves).  He also has great value ‘character’ rucksacks for kids (Dora etc) as well as other 3-5 year old stuff that they all adore.

Opening Times: 7.30am-6.30pm daily

Ion (#B3-58)

2 Orchard Turn

Singapore 238801

T: (+65) 6238 1840

Two Singaporean entrepreneurs, Charles Wong & Keith Wong, set this up ’96 and it’s now a household name here in S’pore.  Sold in and around Asia as well as the Middle East, Charles & Keith let’s you buy local – which is surprisingly hard to do on this island.  Great prices and on the whole, great styles for both bags and shoes (shoes are their mainstay).  With around 20 shops island-wide, they have a presence in most shopping centres, including Ion, as listed here, which houses one of their Signature Label stores. BTW: Their slick, city-living flip flops are a must.  If you are over a size 41 though – don’t bother with this shop at all………you will make like Cinderella’s ugly sister.  If you ARE a 40 or 41, visit their biggest shop at Wisma Atria (#B1018/19; T: (+65) 6238 3312 – you can reach it underground from Ion) that gives you the best chance of success.  They usually only carry one or two 40s and 41s per select styles, so be lucky and get there quick.  Great for copycat styles, so if you are hankering after a Choo but can only run to a look-a-like shoe – come here.

Opening Times: 11am-10pm daily

Tina Tan Leo’s (of All Dressed Up acclaim) bag boutique.  The bar is stocked with red carpet arm candy, with proper red carpet prices. With prices charting the $2,000 mark, just make sure you don’t leave it somewhere.  Show-stoppers include the fabulous Judith Leiber crystal creations that take the form of,….well…..just about anything, from a robin to a fish to a fan.  Other must-haves are gorgeous tan snakeskin clutch bags  topped with long coral and glass beaded clasps from Asian designer Bagatelle (from $689 upwards).  Accessories are ingenious including huge and unforgettable ceramic Marion Vidal necklaces that almost look like a chemical equation – in a good way.  Save up and get one for Christmas.

Opening Times: 10am-8.30pm daily

Same but different: Also check out THE LINK HOME (Palais Renaissance #03-06/07; T: (+65) 6737 7503) for seriously grown up, fearfully pricey English style accessories for your home.

Local street-wear label, urban but totally wearable, selling great bags, clothes, luggage and accessories.  This little gem also houses the delectable and original PS. Café (i.e. Project Shop Café – the inspirational starting point for the now much feted cafés and restaurant).  There is also a store in Ngee Ann City (#B1-028; T: (+65) 6887 4942) which just sells bags.

Opening Times: 10.30am-9.30pm Sun-Thurs; 10.30am-10pm Fri & Sat

Shop here for shoes and bags with a bit of individuality compared to some of the other department store offerings, which are a little more predictable.  Check out their own label Tangs Studio (for shoes in particular) on Level 2 that tends to be well priced as well as well made.  In fact, it is so successful that there is a stand-alone Tangs Studio store selling accessories only in Great World City – see below – and the line is also stocked in Tangs’ secondary department store at VivoCity.   Tang + Co is their boutique designer section which is also worth a look in terms of  good shoes (at the far end of level 2 in Tangs Orchard).

Opening Times: 10.30am-9.30pm Mon-Thurs & Sat; 10.30am-11pm Fri; 11am-8.30pm Sun

Great World City (#01-04/05)

1 Kim Seng Promenade

Singapore 237994

T: (+65) 6737 5500

Department store Tangs’ in-house label with, generally, a pretty good selection of accessories but who do cute flats particularly well.  Can be a bit hit and miss, vs. their select but well chosen Tangs Studio offerings in the department stores (Orchard and VivoCity, but the Orchard selection always seems streets ahead).  Great World has the largest accessories-only selection.  Not worth a special trip, but pop in if you are passing.

Opening Times: 10.30am-9pm daily

Paragon (#02-12)

290 Orchard Road

Singapore 238859

T: (+65) 6737 8281

As if Singapore really needed ANOTHER high-end shop, however, their selection is quite discerning and it’s a relief that their labels are more hard to come by out here vs hideous mainstream monsters.  An accessories-only boutique – collated and run by (you’ve guessed it) Tangs department store.  This is 1,000 sq ft of designer space groaning with chic with bags, shoes and accessories from labels including Alima, Latitude Femme and Soir de Lune.   They also have a concession within Tangs Orchard.

Opening Times: 10.30am-9pm daily

Singapore 238872

An obvious choice.  The Level 1 shoe department is hard to miss and mainly stocks Guess, Steve Madden, French Sole, Nine West and bejeweled Lucieno.  Level 2 offers various high-end shoe boutiques within the department store (Jimmy Choo and Bally for instance) and also has a great handbag section including House of Anli – Belgium’s answer to Lulu Guiness.  Kate Spade is all over it on L1.  Ngee Ann City itself – the monolithic mall housing Takashimaya – also offers all of the greats, with their stores predominantly scattered over Levels 1 and 2….if you are looking for labels and bling, dahling, you have arrived.

There is no doubt about it – this is quite possibly THE most unlikely looking (and named) bespoke shoe shop in the world… stick with it, but only if you can really, and we mean REALLY, see beyond its decidedly aunty looking offerings without freaking out.  Rosa has owned and run the shop for 30 years and has been making bespoke shoes for 20.  You need to be specific and clear about what you want – don’t be put off by the (motley) selection of previously made bespoke shoes she has created for past clients, most of which had terrible taste.  Here’s the juice: Rosa will copy your own shoe (bring it in and be prepared to leave it, rather than just providing a photo, in order to get the best possible likeness) in your own material.  She does carry a basic stock of good quality leathers if you are after a pretty standard colour.  Prices are seriously affordable and start from as little as $89 for sandals, $158 for proper shoes (prices do not include material and vary according to styles).

Opening Times: Mon-Sat 10am-7pm; 11am-5pm Sun

T: (+65) 9763 8663

Fabulous, flat snakeskin sandals that wind their way up your leg (choose from ‘full’ or ‘half’) and are show-stoppers. Buy some, but be prepared to be constantly quizzed on where you found them.  Now also for sale in Shopping at Tiffany’s (Tanglin Mall) as well as at most of the expat fairs.

Harvey Nicks in mall form.  A classic.  Paragon, like Ngee Ann City, is one of the better ones, with a huge proportion of high-end designer shops, much a like an enormous department store in terms of selection and variety but with shops instead of concessions.  Tod’s also has a boutique within Takashimaya (#01-00; T: (+65) 6738 3323).  BTW: To revive after a splurge, head down to B1 which has a great selection of restaurants – also see EAT ME/Lunch.
