Face It

This is the listing for everything face related, from threading to facials….BTW: Facials are a Singapore staple – once a month is considered the bare minimum.  It’ll cost you….unless you know where to go (see FEMMA entry).  Sometimes though, you do get what you pay for (see JOANNE).

FEMMA BEAUTY CENTRE

Far East Plaza (#04-61)

14 Scotts Road

Singapore 228213

T: (+65) 6235 3802

Where all the air hostesses (KLM, BA, SQ and Qantas) in the know, go, this is a seriously well kept secret and a veritable beauty find.  Owner Teresa has run the salon here for the last 30 years and really knows her stuff.  UK trained, she only ever uses Guinot products (for those of you that didn’t know, air hostesses are notoriously fussy about the way they look – after all, they can’t risk a post-facial break out) and the prices represent real value for money at $45 for a 45 minute facial (be sure to ask for this specific treatment also known as the ‘without chest massage facial’ – sounds dodgy but they mean decolte) as you will otherwise be steered towards the $80 one for 1.5 hours (incredible value if you can afford the time).  Excellent in terms of product AND technique.  They also offer super meticulous – and good value – waxing services as well as brow and lash tints.

Opening Times: 11am-8pm Mon-Fri; 10am-6pm Sat. Closed Sun

Excellent for a monthly splurge, facials here start at $135 (net).  In a lovely black and white (albeit on a busy road), they offer free parking.

Opening Times: 10.30am-9pm Mon-Fri; 10.30pm-7.30pm Sat & Sun

BROWHAUS

Wheelock Place (#03-04)

501 Orchard Road

Singapore 238880

www.browhaus.com

T: (+65) 6732 0070

Island-wide brow bar offering every possible solution for unruly brows from tweezing to threading to tattoos (yikes).  No more excuses.  They do good lash and brow tints here too.  They are everywhere: as well as Wheelock, they are in Paragon, Raffles City, Suntec, Holland V and Shenton Way – see website for exact addresses.  Book ahead. BTW: I prefer the GWC branch as it’s far easier to get an appointment than in Wheelock, for some reason.  (GWC opens at 10.30am rather than 10am as listed below).  Be very specific – which every branch you go to – about exactly what you want done to your brows.  People have been complaining about being over plucked/threaded but I have never had a problem in the GWC outlet. But you must be super clear from the outset.

Opening Times: 10am-9pm daily

GOODAY BEAUTIE PARLOUR

101 Serangoon Road

Little India

Singapore 218006

T: (+65) 6392 2122

Brilliant beautician’s, hugely recommended for its threading services which is what most of its very local clientele come here for.  It’s been here, in the heart of little India, for 17 years and is owned by a husband and wife team.  No creepy staircase to climb, this beauty find is on the ground floor of a parade of shops and is beautifully clean and tidy.  Old-fashioned barber-style chairs (used for threading purposes) are lined up in the main room, one behind the other and are, more often than not, occupied.  Brow threading costs $5.  Their precision and linear sharpness is superior to the service at Browhaus, the price keener ($10 cheaper) and the parking hassle-free (park behind Serangoon Road on Belilios Lane, you’ll need coupons).  They also offer a waxing service as well as a hot oil hair treatment – we’ve done both and let’s just say that they are not recommended.  The threading IS though and is most definitely worth the trek across town to get here.  BTW: You can’t book an appointment, but try to avoid lunchtime when there can be queues as well as Saturdays when it’s at its busiest.  If you’re taking a taxi to get here and can’t see the numbers, get out where Serangoon Road crosses with Kerbau Road.  Walk with the flow of traffic and Gooday is half a block down, on the left.

Opening Times: 11am-9pm Mon-Sat (8pm-8.30pm for last appointment).  Closed Sun

JOANNE

Elizabeth Heights (#01-01)

57 Cairnhill Road

Singapore 229668

T: (+65) 9734 8075

Joanne Chiam is the Eve Lom of Singapore and has been working as a beautician for about 28 years.  She is the best facialist in town and her number is gold dust.  One of Singapore’s best kept secrets.  SMS for an appointment….it’s only her there, so if she’s with a client, calling can be tricky.  She works exclusively with products from Canada and has a great technique, never leaving you for a second (always important).  She does it all, including proper blackhead extraction, to eyebrow tidying and moustache waxing (all included in the price – say no if you don’t want it).   Treatments start from $150 and you will leave, glowing.  She will take as long as is needed to finish the job, from 1 ½ to 2 hours, depending on the state of you! Go.

Opening Times: By appointment

DEVOTION LIFESTYLE SALON

Peninsula Shopping Centre (#03-18)

Singapore 179804

T: (+65) 9199 5130 or (+65) 6338 4306

Don’t be put off by the tired, old and weird Peninsula Shopping Centre – it just means the rent’s cheap, so ultimately you’ll be paying less for your treatment….always good.  Sally Hew is the only therapist here and she specialises in facial lymphatic drainage and she is an unblocker-extraordinaire.  Prices start at a reasonable $118 for a 45 minute session.  If you are new to this concept, lymphatic drainage can be quite painful, so be warned and don’t come here expecting relaxation.  We’ve done it and go regularly, so it can’t be that bad.  It’s a cleansing kind of pain that leaves you feeling detoxified and rather smug afterwards (almost like a punishing yoga workout, but with more instantaneous results).  Just make sure you lay off the booze post treatment and drink masses of water.

Opening Times: By appointment
